AVON BEACH LOSES ITS CAR PARK TO THE COUNCIL!

As many will have seen from the article in the Bournemouth Evening Echo, Christchurch Council will be taking over the running of our car park from 1st February 2012.

Gone will be free parking over the winter months and instead there will be Pay & Display machines charging year round. Obviously, we are extremely disappointed at this news. Negotiations have been long and protracted with us offering to not only resurface the car park (something we would have done far earlier if the council hadn't been planning to take the car park back) but also to pay a higher rent. None of this could convince the council to change their plans. Sorry folks! We can only remind all of our customers that we believe the 'sunken' car park behind the cafe will continue to not charge during the winter months.

The Derham family has been running Avon Beach (including the car park) for over 75years and neither war nor flood has stopped us yet. The loss of the car park will definitely hurt us but we will continue to offer our customers the best service and best value for money we can!

The 2012 Calendar features a photograph for every day of the year. Click on the info button and it will tell you who took the photograph and why the image is memorable to them. On the actual calendar date the App will also display tide times for the day - handy if you are thinking about coming down to windsurf, sail, fish, or even take a shoreline stroll.

Winner of the Avon Beach Calendar App 2012 Competition ...

The results are in! It was an extremely difficult job even to create the shortlist but after much debating and mulling by our team of judges the winner was selected.

The image voted Best in Calendar was this stunning photograph taken by Geoffrey Franklin. Coming in second was another fantastic image of Swans at Sunrise taken by Iain Hunter. And third place was an image that brought a smile to all the judges faces. Taken at a birthday celebration on the beach is the image of Canute taken by Chris Sergeant and entered by Jane Taylor.

All of us at Avon Beach and The Dorset Wildlife Trust would like to say a huge Thank You! To all who submitted photographic entries for the competition. We were really stunned by the quality of some of the entries! And tremendously grateful for the money you've helped to raise for the DWT.

Avon Beach Café Food Hygiene Excellence

In this day and age of food horror stories continually being reported in the national press The Avon Beach Cafe is proud to announce that we have been awarded the highest rating of food hygiene practice by the Food Standards Agency.

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme is a new initiative designed to give the customer a clearer indication of competency and cleanliness of all food establishments. It is the Food Standards Agency's intention that each Cafe/Restaurant etc. will display their rating at the entrance to their premises giving clear guidance to the visitor.

You will also be able to check a premises rating on their web site in advance before deciding whether to visit them or not. It is not mandatory for a business to display their rating but if they are not one might want to ask the proprietor why. For more information visit food.gov.uk/ratings

If you have a special celebration coming up and are looking for an unusual location, we might have just the thing. The Avon Beach Occasions Hut! This one is the prince-of-all-huts! Not only is it in a fantastic location near all of the site's facilities but it is also supplied with mains electricity, fridge, cooking applicance & kettle plus a table and chairs. Available to hire by the day (from 9am to sundown) for the un-princely fee of £65.

Take Away Coffee

Our Take-Away Cabin (situated in front of the shop) is becoming as popular as the cafe. Open most weekends and during school holidays it is a convenient facility for beach visitors to get a quick snack or drink.
The cabin serves a selection of hot food, such as, sausage rolls, pasties, pizza, hot dogs, as well as sandwiches, cold and hot drinks and the same barista quality coffees made with our own blend, just like in the cafe.

Kayak Hire

If you find yourself with time on your hands why not hire one of our sit-on kayaks and enjoy a leisurely paddle in the Bay?

Sit-on kayaks are extremely stable and can be paddled by a beginner or intermediate with ease. Within a few minutes anyone from 8 to 80 will feel relaxed and in control. We do however require all would be paddlers to be able to swim and to wear the buoyancy vests provided.

Our kayaks can support one adult or one adult and a small child. Hire charges are £10 per hour from an initial £20 deposit.
